Have you ever found yourself doubting what you say, even though you know you’re capable? That doubt isn’t about your skills, it’s about losing sight of the communicator you truly are.
Imagine you are trying to put together a puzzle without the picture on the box. You have all the pieces – your knowledge, skills, and experience…
But without seeing how they fit together, it’s hard to see the bigger picture of who you are as a communicator.
I was recently working with a client who is articulate and experienced. Yet every time she had to present, panic took over.
From the outside, she looked calm. Inside, her mind spun with thoughts like, “I’m failing at everything. They can tell I don’t belong here.”
What she was missing wasn’t skill, it was clarity. Without it, she couldn’t see what was already working or where to start.
Confidence grows when you have clarity on both your strengths and your growth areas.
Why We Can’t See Ourselves Clearly Under Pressure
There’s a scientific reason for this. When the stakes are high your body’s fight or flight system takes over and cortisol and adrenaline flood your system.
Then, the part of your brain that helps with reflection, creativity, and problem-solving gets quiet.
Finally, negative thought loops take over.
Research shows that under stress, people consistently undervalue their own performance. What feels like “I’m failing at everything” is often just your nervous system reacting, not the reality of your communication.
The One-Size-Fits-All Myth
Many professionals try to fix this by following a script or checklist. But communication is never one-size-fits-all. Your style is shaped by personality, learning style, culture, gender, and nervous system patterns.
Plus, there’s the endless inner checklist:
“Sound more confident. Be less robotic. Don’t ramble. Be concise. Be more assertive.”
That mental to-do list pulls you out of presence and makes you feel like you’re performing instead of communicating.
3 Pillars of Confident Communication
I use three pillars to help people see the full picture of their communication.
Presence
- Whether you feel confident and authentic when you speak or lead
- The impression you give your listeners and whether it matches your intention
- Your body language, energy, and self-talk before, during, and after you speak
Power
- The quality of your speaking voice and patterns, including pace, pitch, placement, volume, rhythm, and nuance
- Your delivery skills and how you use your voice to inspire, persuade, and motivate
- Your ability to adapt when the unexpected happens: tough questions, technical issues, timing changes, or even a difficult audience
Purpose
- Having a clear and compelling message
- Making sure your delivery aligns with your intention and goals
- Building habits and preparation that keep you consistent
Looking at yourself through these three lenses gives you a map. You begin to see what is already strong and what needs attention.
